Phase II – Tar Waste Characterization and Clean up – North Central Indiana

To assist in the due diligence process as part of a potential property transaction in Monon, Indiana, SurePoint Environmental was contracted to perform a Phase II investigation to determine if a property had been adversely impacted by the abandonment of two (2) tankers containing asphaltic tar. In addition, several abandoned drums and containers were observed left on the property.

Initially, SurePoint Environmental was asked to provide cost estimates of the removal and disposal of the two (2) tankers located on the site. SurePoint provided a range of costs with little information regarding the waste classification and amount of the contents of the tankers.

SurePoint Environmental then performed a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) of the area surrounding the tankers and the other debris piles on the site. Visual observations, field screening and laboratory analytical results revealed no evidence of significant impacts to the subsurface soil or groundwater.

SurePoint Environmental was then charged with the removal of the tankers and proper disposal of the contents and materials of the tankers based on the cost estimate provided. SurePoint collected samples of the tar and submitted the material for waste characterization. The material meet the special waste criteria and was properly transported and disposed of at an approved local solid waste facility. SurePoint collected confirmatory samples after the removal. SurePoint completed the entire project for less than the initial cost estimate.
During the course of the removal 70 tons of tar waste was removed and disposed. The site was then cleaned and graded. The property transaction was able to move forward for the client.
