Waste Characterization of a New Development, Engineering Firm for the City of Lafayette, Indiana

SurePoint Environmental was contracted to manage and characterize a 150,000 cubic yard (cy) stockpile of soil for removal to enable a Fortune 500 company to break ground for construction activities. A previous firm performed a Phase II site investigation of the 100 acre parcel to determine of the property has been adversely impacted by historic operations. The investigation found low levels of petroleum hydrocarbons in the stockpile and some surrounding areas within the parcel. SurePoint Environmental worked with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and prepared an acceptable Sample and Analysis Plan to accurately assess and characterize the contaminants of concern previously found. SurePoint Environmental collected over 110 soil samples of the stockpiled soil and determined that the material did not pose a risk to human health the environment. The IDEM concurred and the material was able to be removed from site with no special waste disposal fees. The characterization project saved the city, county and state hundreds of thousand dollars.

The following is the testimonial from the project manager of the site.

“SurePoint exceeded my expectations. Jeremy and Joe were both very professional and personable. Their fast and thorough work helped ensure that a Fortune 500 Firm would break ground in an Indiana City.  Within two weeks, they were able to perform over 140 soil samples throughout a 150,000 cubic yard stockpile and provide clear documentation with which Indiana’s Department of Environmental Management concurred. A previous analysis, performed by a different environmental firm, deemed the same stockpile contaminated waste; however, SurePoint’s efforts, combined with their knowledge and experience, resulted in the material being classified properly as clean material. They ultimately saved the City, the County, and their taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
